Squire Sanders’ private client and estate planning lawyers advise on the personal, financial and estate planning needs of clients around the world, from the more traditional estate planning client holding transmitted family wealth to a rapidly growing segment of successful local, national and international entrepreneurs and family business owners. In this highly personalized service area, our lawyers are experienced in and committed to working with family members and groups in sensitive situations.

The traditional core of the practice is estate planning to minimize income, gift, estate and generation skipping transfer taxes affecting the transfer of inherited wealth between generations. Beyond wills, trust agreements and more complex instruments, we help our clients develop integrated multi-generational plans for the disposition and holding of family property and for charitable giving. We have extensive experience in representing clients with offshore investments as well as international families with members in multiple jurisdictions with different tax and property laws. Our lawyers also work with individuals in the particularly sensitive areas of living wills, advanced health care directives, business powers of attorney and other planning for the purpose of minimizing problems relating to incompetency and defining the wishes and expectations of an individual.

The private client group also has extensive experience in working with closely held business owners to develop a plan for either keeping the business in the family or maximizing the profit from its disposition. The need to preserve and promote family harmony in the development of the succession plan and attention to these issues in proposing a succession structure are important elements in the group’s planning process.

The private client group assists clients in federal and state gift, estate, generation-skipping transfer, fiduciary and individual income tax preparation. We provide tax counsel to the fiduciary or individual and support in the event of the examination of a return filed with any governmental organization. The group also has many decades of estate and trust administration experience and extensive expertise in the representation of fiduciaries and beneficiaries in matters resulting in potential or actual litigation of estates, trusts and other family wealth-holding vehicles.
